St. Christopher: Patron Saint of motorists and travelers, was a Christian martyr who
was killed in the 3rd century by Roman emperor Decius. Nothing else is known about
his life. He is also revered by athletes, appearing on many athletic medals, and is one
of the Fourteen Holy Helpers.
Legend: Legend suggests that Christopher was instructed in the Christian faith by a
hermit, who told him to assist people crossing a dangerous river. After performing
this service for some time, a child asked Christopher to take him across the river.
Christopher could barely carry the child across and felt as if he had the entire world
on his shoulders. When he reached the opposite bank, the child revealed that he was
actually Christ, his king, whom he was serving by his work. The child then vanished.
Christopher's name means "Christ-bearer."
